Ancient Systems, Modern Application

Healing Notes draws from four interconnected systems of Chinese wellness philosophy, each offering a unique lens through which to understand the body, the emotions, and the natural world. Together, they form a complete framework for aromatic healing.

Healing Notes

Five Elements

The Five Elements (五行) is the ancient Chinese framework for understanding the interrelationship of all things — nature, the body, the emotions, and the seasons. Each element carries a specific energetic signature that maps to organs, emotions, and scent profiles.

Wood 木 — Liver · Anger · Spring · Green · Grapefruit, Bamboo
Fire 火 — Heart · Joy · Summer · Red · Amber, Cinnamon
Earth 土 — Spleen · Overthinking · Late Summer · Yellow · Patchouli, Vetiver
Metal 金 — Lungs · Grief · Autumn · White · White Peony, Iris
Water 水 — Kidneys · Fear · Winter · Black · Blue Chamomile, Cedar

Yin & Yang

Yin & Yang (阴阳) represents the complementary opposites that govern the universe — light and dark, action and rest, heat and cool. In aromatherapy, yang scents energize and activate; yin scents calm and restore. True wellness requires both.

Yang Energy 阳气 — Citrus, rosemary, eucalyptus. Uplifting, clarifying, energizing. For morning rituals, workspaces, and moments of action.
Yin Energy 阴气 — Lavender, jasmine, sandalwood. Calming, sedating, restorative. For evening wind-down, sleep preparation, and deep rest.
The Balance 平衡 — The goal is not yang or yin alone, but their dynamic interplay. Healing Notes Yin & Yang series offers both, for a complete daily ritual.

24 Solar Terms

The 24 Solar Terms (二十四节气) is China's ancient agricultural calendar dividing the year into 24 micro-seasons. Each term has unique climatic, biological, and emotional qualities that inform scent selection — we do not treat every season the same.

Spring Terms — Awakening, renewal, liver-cleansing greens.
Summer Terms — Full yang energy, heart nourishment, cooling strategies.
Autumn Terms — Lung care, letting go,收敛.
Winter Terms — Kidney restoration, introspection, conservation.

Time Seals

Time Seals (时辰香) combines the art of seal incense (篆香) with the Meridian Clock (子午流注) theory. Each two-hour period corresponds to an organ meridian with specific energetic needs — time itself becomes the medicine.

Zi (23:00-01:00) — Gallbladder meridian. Courage, decision-making. Subtle woody incense.
Wu (11:00-13:00) — Heart meridian. Joy, connection, social energy. Light floral incense.
Shen (15:00-17:00) — Bladder meridian. Letting go of tension, physical flow. Earthy incense.
Hai (21:00-23:00) — Triple Burner meridian. Integration, rest preparation. Deep, contemplative incense.
